There was a time when Kerala could well boast of its achievements in the agriculture sector. However, over the past few years the State has been witnessing a drastic decline in farming, which could be attributed to a plethora of causes.
In an earnest effort at providing a fillip to the farming sector, the State Department of Agriculture has been strengthening its extension wing. The Farm Information Bureau (FIB), on its part, is trying to reach out to the farmers through its extension activities. Information on the changing trends in agriculture and the knowledge explosion in this field is being regularly provided by the FIB.
The latest addition to a series of publications being brought out by the FIB is the ‘Haritha Dalam’, which was formally launched recently by K.R. Gouri, Minister for Agriculture.
The newsletter seeks to convey a whole lot of information on subjects like biotechnology, horticulture, floriculture, water conservation, meat production and control of foot and mouth disease as evident from its first edition.
Even topics of a serious nature are covered in a simple, lucid manner so as to make them comprehensible to the common man. There is information on the Kisan Call Centres functioning in the State, forming part of a programme of the Union Government and also on “Noorumeni’, a fort nightly TV programme based on agriculture. The FIB’s pioneer publication, the ‘Kerala Karshakan’, has just turned 50.
